view original post

Retailers have begun announcing their trading hours for the festive break, including if they will be open on Boxing Day.

Several of the major supermarkets have said they will not be open on December 26 this year.

Many stores stayed shut on Boxing Day in 2020 as a way of thanking staff for hard work during the coronavirus pandemic – and it looks like that will continue this year.

At least four of the Big Seven supermarkets will keep their doors closed on Boxing Day, 2021. Others have yet to confirm their plans for the festive period.

Boxing Day this year falls on a Sunday, with the bank holidays for December 25 and 26 then moved to the following Monday and Tuesday, December 27 and 28. That will mean reduced hours on those days too.

Tesco chose to remain open on Boxing Day last year despite calls from trade unions.

Sainsbury’s also opened on Boxing Day in 2020, but will close its stores on Boxing Day in 2021, which will give around 170,000 employees a day off. Morrison’s confirmed it will follow Sainsbury’s and make the same move.

Remember to expect reduced hours on Monday, December 27 and Tuesday, December 28, as they are both bank holidays due to Christmas and Boxing Day falling on a Saturday and Sunday respectively.

Aldi

For more than 30 years, Aldi has chosen to close stores on Boxing Day and this year is no different.

Aldi supermarkets around the country will be closed on Christmas Day and Boxing Day in 2021. Stores are due to shut at 6pm on Christmas Eve and reopen at 8am on December 27.

In the run-up to Christmas, Aldi will introduce extended opening times. Find the hours at your nearest Aldi supermarkets by checking its store locator here.

Sainsbury’s, Argos, and Habitat

Last year Sainsbury’s opened on Boxing Day, but in September 2021 the supermarket chain announced it will keep all its supermarkets, small convenience stores and petrol stations shut on Sunday, December 26.

Sainsbury’s-owned Argos and Habitat will also be shut. It means around 170,000 employees will get a day off.

Simon Roberts, Sainsbury’s Chief Executive, said: “Christmas is a really special time for so many, but because of lockdown restrictions last year, lots of us weren’t able to celebrate in the way we wanted. In recognition of this and to say a massive thank you to all our colleagues for everything they have done during the last challenging year, we will be closing all of our supermarkets, convenience stores and petrol filling stations, as well as Argos and Habitat stores, this Boxing Day. I want to thank our customers in advance for their understanding, which will mean as many of our team as possible can have a well-deserved break to spend time with loved ones.”

All M&S-owned stores in the UK will close on Christmas Day and Boxing Day.

Mr Rowe wrote: “Up and down the country, our colleagues have been there for our customers in the most challenging of circumstances.

“As a small thank you for their incredible hard work, we’ve taken the decision to close our operations on Boxing Day once again this year, to enable our colleagues to spend more time with their family and loved ones.”

Home Bargains

To thank staff, Home Bargains says it is keeping all 500 of its stores closed on Boxing Day. They will also shut on New Year’s Day.

A spokesperson said: “We recognise how incredibly hard all of our colleagues have worked over the last year, to continue to serve the local communities that rely on them so much.

“In light of this, we felt it was only right to reward store teams by taking the decision to close all of our stores on Boxing Day and New Year’s Day, and also close stores early at 5pm on Christmas Eve.

“As a family-run business we know the importance of being together at Christmas with those we care about most, now more than ever, and this is our way of saying thank you to all of our colleagues for their continued hard work and dedication.”

Holland and Barrett

Health chain Holland and Barrett is giving its 500 store and warehouse staff a day off on Boxing Day.

All of its stores will be shut on December 26.

Anthony Houghton, group retail and property director at Holland and Barrett, said: “The decision to close our stores in the UK and Ireland on December 25 and 26, one of the busiest trading periods of the year, is to say thank you to our colleagues who have worked tirelessly and under very difficult restrictions since the coronavirus pandemic began in 2020.

“I would like to thank everyone at Holland and Barrett for their continued hard work and commitment to each other and our customers and hope this time away from work will allow them to spend quality time with loved ones over this period.”

“Caring for our colleagues is something we take very seriously and closing our stores again on Boxing Day is another small way to show our appreciation and say thank you. It’s a little early to be wishing anyone a merry Christmas, but we hope that our colleagues will be able to use this time to relax with family and friends, and of course, their pets.”
