Condemning the rise in the prices of essential commodities, members of Madurai-based forum ‘Save the Nation’ staged a protest in front of the Madurai Collectorate on Monday demanding the government to take necessary steps to reduce the prices.

The members said people had been affected by the impact of COVID-19. They had been financially hit and are still finding it difficult to make ends meet. They complained that the people had lost their jobs and no adequate employment opportunities were created.

“Under these circumstances, the prices of essential commodities have been rising. The people are affected as a result. Apart from lack of job opportunities, many government establishments are being privatised,” they said.

‘The rise in the prices of fruits and vegetables, medicines, cylinders, petrol, diesel and other essential commodities has to be prevented and rates have to be revised. People are already affected by the implementation of the Goods and Services Tax (GST).’

They also urged the government to generate adequate employment opportunities and reduce the rate of taxes and interest rates on loans.
