Pillen discusses abortion initiative
A week after the advocacy group seeking to expand abortion access in Nebraska through a ballot initiative released a TV advertisement highlighting the delayed treatment of a Lincoln woman’s doomed pregnancy, Gov. Jim Pillen and a handful of medical providers gathered Tuesday to decry what he called misinformation about the state’s 12-week abortion ban.
Joined at a news conference by Nebraska’s chief medical officer and four private women’s health care providers, Pillen lamented the “misinformation about miscarriage and ectopic pregnancy treatments” that he said “anyone who’s watched TV in the last few weeks has likely seen.”
Said Pillen: “I want to make sure that all women in Nebraska know that they can get proper and professional medical care in our state when they’re dealing with a miscarriage or an ectopic pregnancy.”

Woman pleads guilty to tampering
A Lincoln woman has pleaded guilty to tampering with evidence in a police investigation last year into allegations that her adult son, Joshua Tackett, had abused his girlfriend’s young son, leaving him bruised, battered and brain dead, unable to wake up.
After learning her son would likely be investigated for the boy’s injuries, Karen Vestecka went to his apartment and took out a gun in a gun case and a pair of Jordan shoes.
But police were watching his apartment and saw her do it.
On Tuesday, Vestecka, 60, pleaded guilty to the felony charge, plus a misdemeanor charge of false reporting.
NU bullish on receivers
It can be difficult to find silver linings in a 49-point loss, but a pair of Nebraska freshman wide receivers impressed Saturday at Indiana.
And, Husker offensive coordinator Marcus Satterfield said Tuesday that it could lead to more playing time for Jacory Barney and Carter Nelson.
Barney caught eight passes against the Hoosiers and ran in a touchdown. He is now Nebraska’s leader in receptions. Nelson has only one catch in the past four weeks, but he’s gradually seeing more snaps as a result of doing the right things.
Said Satterfield: “These guys at the end of the year are going to be really important where we need as much depth as possible.”
