Social Security May 2025 payments: Why SSI recipients will get two checks

view original post

The Social Security Administration (SSA) will issue two Supplemental Security Income (SSI) payments in May 2025, along with regular retirement and survivor benefit checks.

Typically, SSI benefits are paid on the first of each month. However, when the first falls on a weekend or federal holiday, the payment is made on the last business day of the previous month. This timing quirk will result in two SSI payments in May.

May 2025 Social Security payment schedule

Here is the full schedule for May 2025:

  • Thursday, May 1: SSI payments for May.
  • Friday, May 2: Social Security payments for individuals who began receiving benefits before May 1997 or receive both SSI and Social Security.
  • Wednesday, May 14: Payments for beneficiaries born between the 1st and 10th of the month.
  • Wednesday, May 21: Payments for beneficiaries born between the 11th and 20th.
  • Wednesday, May 28: Payments for beneficiaries born between the 21st and 31st.
  • Friday, May 30: SSI payments for June.

Most SSI recipients will see two deposits in May: one for May (May 1) and one for June (May 30).

How much are Social Security and SSI payments in 2025?

For 2025, the maximum federal SSI benefit is:

  • $967 per month for individuals
  • $1,450 per month for couples

Actual SSI payments may be lower, depending on factors such as additional income and living arrangements.

Social Security retirement benefits vary by work history and claiming age. In 2025:

  • The maximum monthly payment at full retirement age (67) is $4,018.
  • Early filers at age 62 can receive up to $2,831.
  • Delaying retirement until age 70 increases the maximum benefit to $5,108.

As of January 2025, the average Social Security retirement check is about $1,976 per month.

Why do some months have two SSI payments?

According to the SSA, when the first of the month falls on a weekend or federal holiday, SSI benefits are paid on the last business day before the month begins. As a result, recipients can receive two payments in one month and none at the start of the next.

For May 2025, this adjustment occurs because June 1 falls on a Sunday.
