Veteran actor Henry Winkler, best known for his role as Arthur ‘Fonzie’ Fonzarelli on Happy Days, recently explained why retirement is not part of his plans, even at 80 years old. Rather than slowing down, Winkler said that he likes to “work a lot,” noting that retirement can be “deadly.”

80-year-old Henry Winkler says retirement is ‘the furthest thing from’ his imagination

During his latest appearance on the IMO with Michelle Obama and Craig Robinson podcast, Henry Winkler shared why he won’t take up retirement anytime soon.

“You know, people keep asking me, Am I gonna retire? Or have you retired?” the Night Shift star said. “And I think that is like the furthest thing from my imagination. I will retire when I am not able to do… again and more. I think that it is deadly.”

Winkler then explained that he likes to “work a lot.” He said, “I have several jobs. I do a wonderful show on the History Channel called Hazardous History. When they presented it to me, I just loved the facts of it.” He then revealed that he initially did just 8 episodes, but the channel offered him 30 more because it performed well.

The Out of Practice actor then spoke about his latest book, which marks his 40th release. “Our newest children’s book came out on September 30. This is the 40th,” he continued. “I did not know I could do this. And what I learned was that there’s more than one way to do anything. I have a wonderful partner, Lynn Oliver. She types, I talk. Then she has an idea. I wait. She types. Then she reads it to me, and we argue over every word. And since 2003, we have 40 children’s books.”

Henry Winkler then outlined the premise of his latest book: “The newest one is Detective Duck. This little duckling who dreams about being a detective, and she’s an environmentalist and powerful.” He admitted that, despite being dyslexic, he had written so many books. “I tell children—every child I meet, whether they want to hear it or not—how you learn has nothing to do with how brilliant you are.”
