view original post

While Good Friday is not a federal holiday in the United States, it carries enough significance to disrupt some day-to-day financial activities.

For those planning trades or banking errands, it’s important to know how this religious day affects operations across Wall Street and banking institutions.

Here’s what’s open, what’s closed, and what you need to know today.

What Is Good Friday?

Good Friday is the Christian observance honoring the crucifixion of Jesus Christ and falls two days before Easter Sunday. This year, Good Friday is on April 18.

As has been the case in prior years, the day leads to a partial closure of U.S. financial systems and services, despite not being designated as a public holiday by the federal government.

The holiday is observed by many Christian denominations through fasting, church services and reflection, though its observance in the U.S. varies significantly across states and sectors. The date of Good Friday changes each year.

Is the Stock Market Open Today?

No. The New York Stock Exchange (NYSE), Nasdaq, and U.S. bond markets are all closed on Good Friday, according to NYSE.

This closure has been a longstanding tradition and provides a pause for traders and investors ahead of the Easter weekend. Markets will reopen on Monday, April 21, 2025.

While stock trading is paused, after-hours and international markets may still be accessible depending on the broker and the region.

Next year, Good Friday will fall on Friday, April 3.

Are Banks Open Today?

Most banks will remain open on Good Friday. That means institutions like Bank of America, Chase, Wells Fargo, and others will conduct normal business hours. However, branches located in areas with strong religious or state-based observance could close or could operate with reduced hours.

To confirm local branch operations, customers are advised to check directly with their bank or use online tools for branch-specific information.

Is Good Friday a Holiday?

Good Friday is not a federal holiday in the U.S. which means government offices, public schools, and post offices typically remain open. However, it is recognized as a state holiday in a few jurisdictions, including Connecticut, Delaware, Hawaii, Indiana, Kentucky, Louisiana, New Jersey, North Carolina, North Dakota, Tennessee, and Texas.

In these states, certain public services and offices may be closed or have modified hours.

Private companies are not required to close or provide time off on Good Friday, so workplace policies vary widely. Employees seeking the day off for religious reasons may need to request personal or vacation time.
